Jose Nilo - Me

Picture
I was the type of person that was on a "see food diet." Everything I saw I ate. But I was always skinny. I was very fit my whole life, I played baseball, soccer, other sports and I rode my bike and ran day in and day out. Growing up we didn't know about lifting weights and training. We just knew we had to practice a lot to get better. It wasn't until my college years that I was introduced to cycling as a sport. I had the “cyclist” body. Skinny upper body and strong legs, (my legs were skinny too, but strong). I was fast on the bike. Fast forward to when I started training and coaching, most of my clients didn’t know I was in really good shape. They wanted me to show them proof that I could help them get results. Since I didn’t have the "six pack" I didn't look like a trainer or athlete to them. I mention this because people still ask me to show them my abs as proof of..., (something). Weird, but true.

In 2013 I figured I wasn’t going to be a professional cyclist, so I decided to bulk up a bit and get the “fitness physique.” I got into an 8 week challenge and my results are what you see here. On the left is my before picture. I was 130 pounds and in great cycling shape. In the middle is my after picture. I went up to 146 pounds in those 8 weeks. Forward to 2016, I still have a defined physique, which you can see on the picture on the right. I’ve been able to maintain my weight between 138 pounds to 142 pounds and I can keep 9% to 12% body fat throughout the year, depending on where I am in my training.

As a trainer, having defined abs gives me more credibility. I have to be a walking billboard.  I don't have that great story to inspire someone. I'm just a person who has worked hard to achieve my goals and I maintain daily habits that have kept me fit, athletic and healthy.

2016 after 2 miscarries and being diagnosed with lupus.
My wife wrote this on her FB page after reading a blog I wrote about when our little ones had high fevers of 105. To see blog click here.
Fevers are one thing, an autoimmune disease is another!
I usually don’t share my husband’s posts because I very much like my privacy, but this post inspired me.

Yes my husband helped our little ones with their fevers, but he has helped many others with more serious issues.

A few years ago, Jose and I decided to expand our family. Having already one child getting pregnant again wouldn’t be a problem, I thought. Unfortunately, it wasn’t the case. I became pregnant, but lost the baby. After our second loss, my doctors began to test me for an autoimmune disease as a means of explaining my miscarriages. I really didn’t think anything would come from it. I was sure this wasn’t going to give us answers. To my surprise the test were showing I had lupus. I was surprised! I didn’t understand how I could have lupus. I questioned whether or not I’d be able to carry a child again and how I would live with this diagnosis. Instead of focusing on what I couldn’t control, I decide to focus on what I could. I decided to change my diet. I gave up meat, a lot of my sugary snacks and took up veggies and legumes. Jose coached me through various cleanses throughout the course of a year, loading up on greens, aminos, probiotics, protease and enzymes. By the time my third round of tests came around my results were coming back negative. I lost just shy of 20 pounds and was once again pregnant.

Vianney was my fifth pregnancy. I was scared and didn’t know whether or not I would meet her. I had lupus. Lupus doesn’t go away, but everything I had done made it so that the disease was basically dormant. Still, my pregnancy was high risk. My perinatologist confirmed I had lupus, but also confirmed it wasn’t active. In a time when flare ups typically happen, I had none. During and after my pregnancy I didn’t have any flare ups. I didn’t suffer from pains and aches. I didn’t have any skin lesions. I had what would otherwise be a normal pregnancy. I gained a lot of weight during the multiple pregnancies, but my weight like my lupus is something I work on every day. Luckily for me, Jose has been amazing. He’s been there to wipe my tears, coach me through the challenges and cheer me on...

Jose may not have finished medical school, but God has gifted him with a unique understanding of how our bodies work and a genuine desire to help others. I think it is this desire that fuels his insatiable passion to continue to learn. Whether he coaches someone on his own or partners with someone’s physician, he doesn’t shy away from a challenge. My girls and I are truly lucky to have someone like him. I can only hope others have a “Coach Nilo” they can lean on too.

Gracias Sr. Nilo :)

With Coach Nilo's help, I was able to go from a size 12 to a size 8, and keep the weight off. He pushed me to my limits many times, but it wasn't so intense that I dreaded working out with him again. On the contrary, he made it fun. The routines were challenging, the atmosphere was fun, and moves were consistent enough that you could remember them, but weren't the same every time. They weren't super complex or difficult, either. I still use a lot of the routines that I learned from my time spent with Coach Nilo today. :)
