About me
I was one of those athletes who had the potential to play and compete at elite levels, but I suffered from many limiting injuries and chronic pains that often left me on the sidelines. I suffered from knee problems, shin splints, achilles tendonitis, stress fractures and broken bones.
As a junior in high school, I got the measles. I was in bed and in a dark room for three weeks. I went from weighing 136 pounds to 103 pounds in three weeks, because I couldn't eat and I could barely drink anything. That's when I made the decision to start looking into how to take better care of myself. I wanted to heal my injuries, get rid of my chronic pains and most importantly, I wanted to find a way to never get sick again.
After high school my dad sent me to medical school in Mexico. I was there for 2 years and did well but I missed living in the United States, so I came back and attended UC Irvine where I was double majoring in Spanish and Biology. In August of 2000, my dad died of a heart attack. That night, I was home visiting for the weekend and in the middle of the night I was wakened by my mom's screams. She was yelling out my name, "Jose Antonio! Jose Antonio." I jumped out of bed and stumbled into my parent's room and my dad was lying on the floor. I gave him CPR and revived him once, but he had atherosclerosis and died in my arms that night in our home. That moment had a huge impact in my life. I decided to drop out of school with only 36 units left to graduate and started working in the finance and mortgage industry. I blamed myself for many years because in my eyes, I should have done more to help my dad that night. I was 26 years old.
I never stopped being an athlete. I was racing mountain bikes at an expert level and I kept educating myself in health, fitness and nutrition, especially for endurance athletes. In 2006/2007 I went to a Tony Robbins event and he opened my eyes to many different things about life; but he has a section on health and nutrition that took me back to the days of med school and the incident with my dad. That day I can say I truly started to study and research health, fitness and nutrition. In 2008 after the recession hit, I went into the nutrition industry selling supplements. I got my certifications in fitness and nutrition and have been working in these fields since.
Now, I'm in my 40's, I'm certified in fitness, nutrition, sports therapy and have many hours of continuation study. I can say I've been around the block and back a few times. There's so much information available to us about health, nutrition and fitness; but a lot of the information, even though some of it is correct, is usually incomplete. Normally, we only get pieces of the puzzle when it comes to our health and fitness because there isn't a "miracle pill" that will cure all. I believe we're all different so something that works for one person will not always work for another. For over 10 years now, I've been researching and experimenting, looking for ways to stay as healthy as possible for myself and for my clients and customers.
My biggest WHY for staying in this industry is that I don't want to leave my family without a husband and father in my 40's like what happened with my dad. I am a blessed happy dad of 2 lovely daughters and I'm married to my beautiful wife. I love helping others, but more importantly, I want to see my girls grow and I want to be there through their life journey. I want to be there when they need a hug or when they need a ride to swim practice or when they want to be tucked in bed and read them a bed time story.
I also want this for other families. I may not have the "college degree" but it doesn't mean I haven't educated myself in what I do. By the way, I'm currently attending college again and taking courses to finish what I started. Being an athlete, working with professional athletes, semi-pro's, college, high school, amateur, weekend warriors and even youth athletes has given me so much knowledge and experience in the field of fitness and nutrition, that I want to share it with the world.
Through this website I will post blogs and vlogs about fitness, nutrition and include my ups and downs of my journey as a new dad in my 40's. I hope to help you understand how to train, eat, recover and how to achieve healthier results so that you can perform at your best. It can mean anything from being able to play with your children or keeping up on a weekend bike ride or run with your friends and family or being an elite athlete looking to prepare for competition. I have the knowledge and experience and I'm using this website as one of my ways to communicate and share it with you.
If any of the content on this website brings some kind of value into your life, please share with your friends and family. I would like to ask any of my past and current clients/customers to please send me your testimonials, preferably with your before and after pictures.
